Free and open source software for low and middle income countries. As it should be.

a little context

Why open-source?

Our software is free and open-source because we don’t believe in empire building, we believe in community building. When countries decide to use our software, they should not be stuck with us – they should work with us only for as long as we provide them benefit and they should be free to work with whoever they like in the future, without having to change their software.

We also know that all developers benefit from the work of a global community of open-source software and that contributing to that global pool is a moral imperative, just like paying taxes to maintain roads.

Finally, it is not completely altruistic – we firmly believe that if we do a good job making and delivering software, countries and organisations will pay us to do that and we don’t need to rely on compulsory licence fees (that some can’t afford) to sustain ourselves.

Open-source repository

Open-source licence

Tamanu is available under a free and open-source license (GNU GPL Version 3). Our FHIR API is open-source but is available under a Business Source License (BSL v1.1). The FHIR API is provided (irrevocably) free of cost to all low and middle-income countries.

Tamanu does not require the FHIR API to work – the API only supports integration with 3rd party software. If you would like more information on our API license (and our decision-making process around that licensing), please get in contact.
