Free and open source software for low and middle income countries. As it should be.
a little context
Why open-source?
Our software is free and open-source because we don’t believe in empire building, we believe in community building. When countries decide to use our software, they should not be stuck with us – they should work with us only for as long as we provide them benefit and they should be free to work with whoever they like in the future, without having to change their software.
We also know that all developers benefit from the work of a global community of open-source software and that contributing to that global pool is a moral imperative, just like paying taxes to maintain roads.
Finally, it is not completely altruistic – we firmly believe that if we do a good job making and delivering software, countries and organisations will pay us to do that and we don’t need to rely on compulsory licence fees (that some can’t afford) to sustain ourselves.
